Sarah Myerscough Gallery is thrilled to announce its much-anticipated inaugural exhibition in New York City at Galerie56. This landmark show marks a significant milestone as the gallery’s first international exhibition. The artworks within the exhibition, titled Shades of Light, signify the restorative capacities of craftmaking processes. Envisioning craft as an ongoing and changing mode in which material and artist are in a potent and formative relationship with each other, the works are formed through distinctly contemporary approaches to craft and design. As part of the show, the gallery is exhibiting the Blonde Embrace Collection, commissioned from the prominent British furniture designer John Makepeace OBE. The works are characterised by Makepeace’s elegant and functional visions for wood, combined with his ergonomic approach to form. The design duo Full Grown have created The Bronze Gatti Chair. Its form and surface is taken from their botanical practice of growing furniture, yet bronze's enduring aspect enables the chair a different relationship to time. We are also exhibiting Gareth Neal’s Natural Sand Collection, borne from 3D printing processes. Neal’s work speaks to the evolving aspect of craft, specifically its capacity to absorb and sustain contemporary techniques.Katrien Doms wields fire and scorching heat to sculpt softwoods into undulating slopes. It is said that in certain lights, these works become a deep gold, examples of wooden matter in a transient reaction to light. Alongside this, we are exhibiting a monumental wall hanging from Lin Fanglu, the Loewe Craft Prize winner of 2021. Fanglu’s work is inspired by the traditional craftsmanship of the Bai ethnic minority, located in China’s Yunan Province. Fanglu experiments with traditional methods and materials to produce profound works that centre the place of women and culture in craft.
Additional artists we are showing in New York, include Christopher Kurtz, Teresa Hastings, Aneta Regel, Ernst Gamperl, Luke Fuller, Julian Stair, Nic Webb, Julian Watts, Arko, Marc Ricourt, Peter Marigold and Eleanor Lakelin.
